Books to help us on the journey to longevity

Here's a list of 16 top books with a significant focus on longevity, along with their short descriptions, main areas they touch and my personal recommendations.

My personal favorites are: Lifespan, The Longevity Diet, Outlive, Why we sleep, Advocate for an Indefinite Human Lifespan, Stealing Fire, Atomic Habits and The monk who sold his Ferrari. The last 3 are not usually listed as "longevity books" but I'm sure they will help you substantially on the Longevity Journey. They help building new healthy habits and teach you how to live an amazing active life and enjoy every little moment of it.

I'm open for more inspirations!

Lifespan: Why We Age—and Why We Don't Have To (2019)

Author: Dr. David A. Sinclair

Description: In this revolutionary book, Dr. David A. Sinclair, a leading world authority on genetics and longevity, proposes a radical new theory of aging. He contends that aging is a disease, and that is curable.

In my opinion this is the best book introducing readers to the idea of longevity - presenting both - scientific in-depth research and biohacking tips and protocols. Unfortunately - the first part, might be too scientific and hard to understand for beginners. It might be good to read it at the end :)

Sinclair explores the role of epigenetic changes and how these can alter our genetic material over time, accelerating aging. He posits that by understanding these processes, we can slow down or even reverse them.

The book is a fascinating journey through the biology of aging, the possibilities of technology, and the implications of a drastically increased lifespan. It's a comprehensive, scientifically rigorous, yet accessible discussion of the science of aging and the prospects of finally defeating it.

At the beginning of 2022 - David Sinclair launched his podcast called "Lifespan" - that has updated information, presenting even more tips and protocols on biohacking and longevity. It is presented in a very friendly form od dialogue - and I highly recommend it. Enjoy!

Hallmarks of aging: Epigenetic changes, altered intercellular communication.

Young Forever (2023)

Author: Mark Hyman

Description: "Young Forever" is a comprehensive guide to maintaining health and vitality. It is the 2nd book I would recommend for beginners in this field. Mark Hyman tries to speak the easiest language possible - almost like reading a book for kids. One of the drawbacks is - repeating the same thing too many times - but for beginners it might be good to understand the subject better.

The esteemed physician shares his program to create health and prolong our healthspan. Hyman, utilizing years of medical experience and research, focuses on the role of diet and supplements in managing the hallmarks of aging, such as genomic instability, telomere attrition, and cellular senescence.

His strategies incorporate aspects of functional medicine, tapping into the body's natural ability to heal and slow aging. "Young Forever" is a roadmap for individuals seeking a proactive, preventative approach to health and longevity. It's an empowering read that delivers the tools you need to live a longer, healthier life.

Outlive (2023)

Author: Peter Attia

Description: Peter Attia's "Outlive" is a great work that explores how changes in lifestyle, particularly diet, sleep, and exercise, can positively affect longevity.

Peter focuses on prolonging our healthspan - so that we live as long as possible in great health - and then die quickly. Prolonging the curve of healthy life as we age. As centenarians do.

At the beginning he describes in details the 4 horsemen of chronic diseases - illnesses that amount over 80% of deaths in people over 50 who do not smoke… These are (1) diabetes, (2) cancer, (3) neurodegenerative disease and (4) Atherosclerotic disease (comprised of cardiovascular disease and cerebrovascular disease).

What was really important for me - was understanding - how they develop over the years - even 10-20-30 years before they are sometimes discovered in humans. And this implicates an enormous impact on the importance of regular testing that we can do amazingly good with today's medicine and technology.

Attia leverages his medical knowledge and experience to provide actionable advice to the readers. He delves into the biological processes that occur as we age, discussing mitochondrial dysfunction and loss of proteostasis, and how these can be managed to maintain a longer healthspan.

Attia's medical expertise, combined with his gift for making complex subjects accessible, makes this book a compelling read for anyone interested in extending their life and improving their health. It empowers you with the knowledge to make lifestyle changes that can have profound impacts on your healthspan.

According to Attia - the most important medicine of all - is proper exercise. And it is hard not to agree with him - hearing the data he quotes on that.
